What is a United Methodist?
A United Methodist is a proclaimer of good news.
We recognize that many people (including Christians!) are nervous when the word “evangelism” is mentioned. In the past, evangelism has too often meant powerful, wealthy people imposing their own standards and practices upon people of another culture.
We reject these practices, and seek to treat people of other faiths and other cultures with kindness and respect. Nevertheless, we have not abandoned evangelism altogether; through the way we share our faith, we hope to bring the church back to the root meaning of evangelism: proclaiming good news. There is a good chance that we will talk about our faith, because we want people to know that Jesus has changed our lives, carried us through difficult moments, and filled us with joy and peace. We believe that the Way of Jesus is the antidote to the poison of anger and despair, and we want all the world to share in this good thing that has been such a blessing to us.
