What is a United Methodist?

A United Methodist is filled with the Holy Spirit.

We believe that it is possible to have a direct, personal experience of God’s Spirit in us, an experience so moving and powerful that it can change our lives forever. Those who attended early Methodist meetings were often so moved by God’s presence within them that they cried out loud, wept, or even fell to the ground; for this reason, our spiritual ancestors were sometimes referred to (mockingly) as “barking Methodists.” You won’t find many United Methodists barking these days, but we still believe that God’s Holy Spirit is living within us, giving us the power to overcome sin and become more and more like Jesus every day.
